"The strategic project 2014 of the Centro de Investigação Media e Jornalismo (CIMJ) is organized around three research lines: 1) Media, Journalism and Democracy; 2) Media, New Technologies and Social Uses and 3) History of Media and Journalism. The research centre objectives are detailed in the Strategic Project and the Final Report demonstrates that, in general terms, these objectives were accomplished: to continue ongoing projects and prepare progress reports, to identify within the strategic lines of the CIMJ which ones should be approached in innovative and effective ways in order to understand challenges of a society prey to multiple crisis, to gather a critical mass of researchers and research skills which enable the setting-up of multidisciplinary teams qualified for the prosecution of the research projects, to frame master and PhD’s research carried out at CIMJ in the projects in progress, to invest in the internationalization of the research outcomes carried out by CIMJ members, to develop the efforts regarding the internationalization of Media & Jornalismo journal, to expand international protocols of cooperation in the domains of teaching, training, interchange and research, among others. Scrutinizing in detail CIMJ’s indicators in the period under analysis, it should be noted that some indicators were exceeded and others were below the expectations. In terms of publications, CIMJ aimed at publishing 22 books, 52 papers in international journals and 30 papers in national journals. However, it has published 11, 19 and 6, respectively. Quite differently from publications, communications have considerably exceeded the expectations. CIMJ has aimed at 67 communications in international meetings and 35 in national ones. At international level, it ended up with 76 and it has achieved 38 at national level. On reports, it has produced 11, 9 more than anticipated. In terms of the organization of seminars and conferences, CIMJ also exceeded its expectations. It has predicted 12 and it has organized 33. On advanced training, CIMJ is far from its expectations in terms of PhD thesis (5 when it expected to complete 16) but it has surpassed its objectives in terms of Master theses, with 35 outputs when it has predicted 15. Overall, balancing the objectives and accomplishments, CIMJ’s Final Report should be approved."

"Os objectivos científicos previstos foram plenamente atingidos. Os resultados evidenciam grande qualidade científica, nomeadamente ao nível das publicações em revistas internacionais com referee. O projecto contribuiu para a formação de jovens investigadores e para a projecção internacional da equipa envolvida."

1. Scientific objectives
The project had three main objectives (we quote): “1. the study of political corruption in traditional media and in its electronic editions; 2. studies on social networks, particularly political blogs; 3. its comparative perspective regarding four countries from the Iberian-American-African sphere (Brazil, Mozambique, Spain, Portugal).” Except in what regards part of the 3rd objective (the comparison with Spain), the scientific report and the annex detailing researchers’ activities provide evidence that the objectives of the project were fully achieved.

2. Results
The results of the project largely exceeded the expected ones, as we see when we compare both (we indicate first the expected ones): Publications: Books – 1 – 3 (+2); Papers in international journals – 4 – 8 (+4); Papers in national journals – 6 – 13 (+7); Communications: Communications in international meetings – 7 – 25 (+18); Communications in national meetings – 8 – 27 (+19); Reports – 2 – 2 (0); Organization of seminars and conferences – 1 – 5 (+4); Advanced training: PhD theses – 1 – 2 (+1); Master theses – 2 – 2 (0); Others – 0 – 2 (+2); Patents – 0 – 1 (+1); Actions of awareness and training – 5 – 3 (-2). The only exception was the actions of awareness and training, being the difference compensated by the large amounts of articles and posts about the phenomenon of corruption published in newspapers and blogs. We must also mention the construction of a site dedicated to the project, athttps://corrupcaopoliticacimj.wordpress.com/.

3. Training of young researchers and international development of the team Besides the papers in international journals and the communications in international conferences, the internationalization of the project was also achieved by the participation of researchers and/or consultants from the Universidad de Múrcia, Spain, and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. In regard to the training of young researchers, we must highlight that the team of the project included 5 researchers holding a Master degree, having 2 of them concluded their PhD theses, and 2 undergraduate researchers who concluded their Master theses.

"1. Scientific objectives
The main objective of this project was to study the impact of the changes in media ecology, particularly in print newspapers, upon the cultural journalism, during the period from 2000 to 2010. To do that, researchers used several methodologies: a content analysis of the front pages and the articles of five selected print newspapers (Público, Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Notícias, Correio da Manhã, Expresso) and one print newsmagazine (Visão) with mentions to cultural themes; interviews with cultural editors, journalists, critics and specialized collaborators of the aforementioned newspapers and news magazine; research in the archives of each medium. There was some little deviations in regard to the initial methodological design: there was no occasion to use participant observation, and the interviews were 14 instead of 20. However, the data collected through the methodologies that were used were much more and richer than initially expected. This led the researchers to concentrate in the comparison between 2000 and 2010, being the intermediate years studied by systematic sampling.
The data provided by the researchers, both in the reports and the website of the project (http://culturaprimeirapagina.fcsh.unl.pt/) allow us to conclude that the scientific objectives of the project were fully achieved, giving a very important contribute to the study of cultural journalism, a field largely understudied in Portugal.

2. Results
As we can see next, the effective results of the project largely overpassed the expected ones in the generality of the fields (we indicate first the expected results): Publications: Books – 1 – 2 (+1); Papers in international journals – 3 – 4 (+1); Papers in national journals – 8 – 13 (+5); Communications: Communications in international meetings – 12 – 21 (+9); Communications in national meetings – 12 – 20 (+8); Reports – 2 – 2 (0); Organization of seminars and conferences – 1 – 2 (+1).
We must also highlight the aforementioned website of the project, which presents the following sections (we translate from Portuguese): Project, Publications, Conferences, Links, and Final Conference. The section Project includes Presentation, Objectives, Methodologies, Concepts/Glossary (the main terms used by researchers), Newspapers/Supplements (characterization of the corpus), and Results/Conclusions, including a lot of texts and statistical data gathered by the project.

3. Training of young researchers and international development of the team
In regard to advanced training, the master dissertation of one of the members of the project was dedicated to the theme of the project, and she is now a PhD student in Digital Media through UT Austin/Portugal Program. The project integrated also some fellows holding master and graduation degrees. In regard to internationalization, there are evidences that it was achieved mainly through the publication of some papers in international journals (4), and a large number of communications in international meetings (21).

"The research goals of the project have been attained with a high scientific level.
Two secondary aspects should be noticed:

1- There is not a complete correspondance between the outputs listed in the FCT platform and the ones listed in the detailed version of the final report in what concerns to some data, particularly in "papers published in international and national journals" (the first list indicates 23; the second one points to 16) and in "books published" (the first points to 32, but this includes the number of chapters published in books). Nevertheless, the figures supersede, in some cases, the proposed goals; and, in other cases, if they do not attain the goals in some items (as in communications delivered in national conferences) that is balanced by results above expected in correlative items (communications in international conferences); in other cases still, some doubts remain, but the figures are, at least, close to what was planned (that is the case of papers published in national and international journals, which figures lack some congruency as noticed above: if summed up every single reference the figure seems to be 14 published papers — 8 in international journals, 6 in national — when the expected total was 18).

2- There is an apparent absence of public access to the results of goal 5 ("organization and online publication of work tools pertaining to censorship files”), what possibly refers to the data basis on the Portuguese censorship archives, planned and announced (also in the cronogram) to be made public, but which seems to have no link provided in the final report. .

Comentário

In spite of some discrepancy between some of the expected indicators and the indicators effectively achieved ( particularly in the items "Papers in national journals","Communications in national meetings"and "Organization of seminars and conferences" ), one must highlight that some important items were quantitatively surpassed ( for instance Books and Reports). In both items, it’s possible to verify the delivery of some quality papers in Journals assessed as Qualis A2 (Brazil) or conferences promoted by ICA or European Media Management Association. Some of the outcomes (mainly books) achieved very good quality standards, being posteriorly assessed in competitive contexts. However, the absence of the previewed seminars and conferences, and the low number of papers and communications in the national academic community hurts the dissemination of results of obvious interest for the Portuguese context. The team is aware of this fragility giving a plausible explanation related with the budget. It is strongly recommended to promote the dissemination of the gathered data in the Portuguese academic community. Some positive point that favors this assessment, are the pertinence of the subject, the quality of the data, the quality of the theoretical framework and the cooperation between the academy and the industry
