Europe Behind (mis)Understandings: a Critical View by Communication Students | 30 September 20142014-09-16T12:45:22+00:00

Europe is indeed diversity; a multiplicity of identities with their own memories and desires of belonging. However, this way of understanding Europe as an agora of multiple belongings is challenged by the persistence and (re)apparition of old and new stereotypical and prejudicial views, reinforcing the North-South divide. In this context, new views are needed, which are capable of incorporating all kinds of irregularities, exceptions and disagreement without dividing or categorising. How can the media contribute to the building of a critical view on Europeaness as an open and fluid form? In order to reflect on these issues, we propose a participatory two-day seminar with media and communication students from different EU member states. Those wanting to participate are asked to select a written article published in 2013-2014 in the national press of his/her country of residence and in which Europeaness is fostered and recognised in its diversity or, on the contrary, in which a common European sense of belonging is hindered. Target audience: students of communication and media enrolled in any European university and currently living in Europe. Format and submission of participations: Proposals should be submitted in English using the annex form, and they will include the following data: – Personal data (complete name and five-lines CV). – Summary of a selected article (200 words). – Personal critical analysis of the article in connection to the topic of the seminar (300 words).

The seminar and publication: The authors of the selected participations will be invited to take part in a two-day seminar which will take place in Barcelona in December 2014, and in which the participants will present and discuss on the critical analysis of the articles. The organisation will cover general accommodation, travel and subsistence expenses. After the seminar, participants will be asked to send a brief article (1.000 words) on the topic integrating the inputs of the debate held during the seminar into the initial proposal of participation. These articles will be issued in an online publication edited by CIDOB. Further instructions regarding this article will be given in due time. By submitting the proposal, the applicants accept to participate in the seminar in case they are selected.

Timescale for the call for participation: 30 September 2014: Deadline for submission of participations. 15 November 2014: Authors will be notified of the results of the selection made by a scientific committee. Beginning December 2014: Seminar in Barcelona. End December 2014: Deadline for submission of complete articles.

Communications will only be accepted if they comply with the stated deadlines and requirements. All proposals and written communications should be sent to Isabel Verdet Peris iverdet-assistant@cidob.org
