The Fifth International Conference on Historical News Discourse – CHINED V – will be held at University Fernando Pessoa, in the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, in Porto, Portugal, from 11th to 13th of June.

We would like to invite presentations on news reporting from the Early Modern English to the dawn of the twentieth century, in a variety of approaches, ranging from more historical perspectives on different types of publications, to pragmatics and sociolinguistics studies, including applied linguistics. Thus, themes and sub-themes will include:

.. Shaping realities in news reporting from Early Modern English to the dawn of the twentieth century.

SOCIO-HISTORICAL CONTEXT:

.. How can historical events be inferred from news discourse (for example, the positioning of newspapers vis-a-vis the major historical events of the period / How did newspapers discursively reflect the major historical events)?

.. What was the role of news publications in the shaping of social and political circumstances?

.. How do the different styles of news publication echo existing social settings?
