Whatever your interest, whether it’s fashion, cooking, or anything else, the chances are there’s a television programme about it. The EUscreen project makes thousands of items from Europe’s television history freely available through its online portal and through Europeana. Its collection goes back to the early 1900s and gives a unique overview of European societies, cultures, folklore and habits. A recently released string of online exhibitions, built by researchers, broadcast employees and archivists, puts these items in context and helps users, educators and the general audience to get the most out of this exciting collection.

The exhibitions cover historical events, political debates and everyday life in Europe. Expert knowledge and a fascinating range of materials combine to offer exciting exhibitions on a wide range of subjects. Dr Sian Barber presents the exhibition Being European, which brings together source materials from providers across the continent and is divided into multiple strands that showcase what European culture and identity may signify. Dr Dana Mustata’s exhibition History of European Television covers a comparative, visual analysis of television cultures in the 19 different countries that participate in the project.

The project now has 16 different online exhibitions. The innovative exhibitions offer a range of audiovisual content and give you the ability to click through to the original materials on EUscreen. Here, you can find out more about the programmes, share the links or get in touch with the original providers of the material. Many more exhibitions will become available over the next couple of months and EUscreen is working hard on tools that will allow users of the site to start creating their own exhibitions!
